SHIPS offers you the community, training and supervision to building to skills and knowledge in the area of sexual health treatment. 

Learn through supervised practice while you create meaningful change in our community providing industry-leading treatment for clients.  


Position description 

Develop your skills for sexual health specific treatment through supervised practice, partaking in industry-leading training, and being part of our passionate, supportive team. While receiving this support and training, your duties include:

Treatment

  • Deliver psychological treatment for individuals and/or more than one person for sexual health, intimacy and related mental health issues

  • Deliver psychological treatment for mental health issues for marginalised community members such as those who practice kink or BDSM, those who engage in non-monogamous relationship structures, sex workers or members of the LGBTIQA+ community

Assessment:

  • Conduct WPATH assessments to support gender affirmation referrals and procedures 

  • Complete written reports to support gender affirmation referrals and procedures  

Administration and communication:

  • Maintain clinical case notes

  • Respond to internal and external emails

  • Write mental health review letters for General Practitioners

  • Write professional assessment reports and support letters for clients and health professionals

  • Consult with health practitioners regarding the treatment of clients

  • Liaise with administration and practice staff regarding therapeutically informed communication with clients, as well as booking and availability

  • Attend monthly team meetings to maintain collaborative care of clients

We are currently providing most sessions via Telehealth and face-to-face sessions in alignment with government recommendations.

About you:

  • AHPRA registration as a Psychologist,  Clinical Psychologist, or Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, Psychiatrist or General Practitioner 

  • Medicare registered

  • Ability to work independently and in team environments

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Completed training in trauma therapy, desirable

  • Training in or experience with sex and intimacy treatment desirable; interest necessary

  • Completed training and qualifications in relationship therapy, desirable

  • Sensitive and collaborative approach to treatment

  • Passion for learning and self-development

  • Incorporates self-care and work/life balance into practice

  • SHIPS provides treatment that is Medicare funded. In order to receive a Medicare number, you require registration as a Psychologist (clinical or general), Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, Psychiatrist or GP. Unfortunately, provisional psychologists are not yet eligible for Medicare Numbers.

  • Unfortunately we do not have the capacity to offer internships or host volunteers at this stage. If you are interested in learning more about the area you could join our SHIPS training community (we have a student payment plan available).

  • Group supervision is offered as part of our SHIPS training courses and if you join our team, you would receive fortnightly individual supervision and group supervision.

  • To work at SHIPS you require interest and a desire to learn about a psychological approach to sexual health treatment - we provide you with the training. The application of Psychology models and modality to the treatment of sexual health issues is a different approach to traditional sex therapy and sexology treatment. It is definitely helpful to have sexology knowledge and training though!
