How common are erectile difficulties?

Most people with penises will experience difficulties with erections at some point in their life. Ongoing difficulties occur for 10% of people with penises under the age of 35 and 50% over 50.

What causes erectile difficulties?

Erectile difficulties can be caused by anxiety about performance, a history of messages about sex, trauma, questioning about gender or sexual identity, lack of information about sex skills, conflict with partner/s, lack of desire, lack of comfort, or lack of time to relax.

Erectile difficulties can also be caused by physical health conditions and medication side-effects, so we recommended that you consult your General Practitioner for an assessment.

How does treatment work?

Psychological treatment for erectile difficulties uses talk-based-therapy and homework exercises to assist you to change thinking and behaviour patterns about your experience of sex and/or masturbation to elevate your symptoms.

The practitioner will first ask you about your life and your experience with erectile difficulties.
