What is a psychologist who provides treatment for sex and intimacy?
A psychologist has specialist training in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders. We adhere to principals of ethical practice, which means your wellbeing is the central concern and focus. A psychologist who provides treatment for sexual health and intimacy issues is familiar with research and therapeutic techniques that can be used to treat these issues. They can also treat mental health issues simultaneously.
What can I expect on my first session?
In the first session you should feel safe and supported. The psychologist would like to hear what brought you to the session and what you would like to get out of treatment. You will be asked some questions about your current symptoms, your personal circumstances and history. There is no rush, and you can speak about whatever feels comfortable. The session will last 50 minutes.
How do I know if treatment is working?
Treatment works in different ways for different people. Depending on the issues you are hoping to address, treatment can sometimes take longer than you initially expected. Changing the way you think or behave involves learning a new skills - so practice, repetition and time are required.
It is important that you review your progress with your psychologist so you can figure out if treatment is working. If you would like to work in a different way, try something new, or if you have concerns about your progress, you should discuss this with your psychologist.
It is important that you find a psychologist who is the right fit for you. You are never obligated to continue treatment if it does not feel effective or comfortable. Treatment is about you.
How can I find out if I am eligible for a Medicare rebate?
You can speak to your GP about your eligibility for a Mental Health Care Plan. You will need to book a long consultation appointment for this. The plan will need to include the name of your psychologist for you to receive the rebate.
